The Pandemic simply highlighted much of what was already known: the gender inequities in maternal health, family care, and childhood education all have grave impacts on not just women, but they’re cyclical. Without much-needed support, mothers will unravel - and so too will their families. Fewer babies will be born, mental health issues among kids and adults will continue their steep incline, and money will dry up as earning potential diminishes due to lack of flexibility.

The big, silver lining of it all? Founders, female founders, are not accepting the status quo. Instead, they’re coming up with solutions for maternal health and wellness, family care, parental employment support, ed-tech programs, preemptive tests for mental health issues, and new frameworks for the family operating system at home. The world is changing quickly, but female founders are keeping pace.

In celebration of Boss Beauties partnership with Barbie and the impact that they’re making for girls of the future, we’re funding one business that supports the mothers, and the families of the future, so that kids will reshape the world to be one we all are proud and thrilled, to live in.

The Why

Mothers face numerous physical, mental, and socioeconomic obstacles when it comes to having children.

  • Statistics show that in 2021, there were about 33 maternal deaths for every 100,000 live births. The last time the government recorded a rate that high was 1964 (New York Times).
  • On top of that, maternal mental health conditions, such as anxiety, perinatal and postpartum depression, and birth-related PTSD, are the most common complications of pregnancy and childbirth, affecting 1 in 5 women. Among those affected, 75% go untreated (American Hospital Association).

Now let’s look at the family unit and the challenges and expenses related to childcare and children’s mental health.

  • According to a report by ReadyNation, insufficient care for children under 3 depletes the country of $122 billion each year in lost earnings, productivity, and revenue
  • According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 1 in 5 U.S. children ages 3–17 has a mental, emotional, behavioral, or developmental disorder.
  • Mothers are getting hit particularly hard in the workforce, according to the State of Motherhood Report 18% of moms changed jobs or left the workforce in the past year. Of those, 28% said they did so to be home with young kids, but 15% are staying home due to a lack of childcare.

Amidst these obstacles, female founders are refusing to accept the status quo. They are actively developing solutions to address maternal health and wellness, family care, parental employment support, ed-tech programs, and innovative frameworks for the family operating system at home. The world is rapidly changing, and female founders are at the forefront, keeping pace with the evolving landscape.

By supporting mothers and families, we’re supporting a better future for everyone.
